Discovering The Different Bearded Dragon Types   by Patrick Willmott

The “Pogona Barbata” is found on the eastern and southern coasts of Australia, and even though all bearded dragon types share common characteristics and for all intents and purposes, all beardies may appear the same. The “Pogona Barbata” has longer spikes and is the largest of the species. Being an omnivore, as all dragons are, this coastal lizard enjoys a variety of foods, which includes insects, fruit, flowers and greens and the “Pogona Barbata” are also known to consume smaller sized lizards.

The Small Scaled dragon or the “Pogona Microlepidoata” has the smallest natural habitat and this specie are found in the north-western parts of the country. Similar to other bearded dragons, but the difference between these small scaled lizards and other types of beardies are the lesser number of spikes on the throat area. This variety of lizard reaches a size of about five and a half inches and their natural habitat includes shrubs and woodlands.

Lawson’s dragon or “Pogona Henrylawsoni” is found in the north-eastern parts of Australia and it is one of the smallest types. Even though the central or inland dragons are the preferred lizard to be kept in captivity, pet owners have also enjoyed success with this variety of dragon. Interestingly, this species is preyed upon by poisonous snakes and as a defense mechanism these northern-eastern Australian dragons can hide or conceal themselves in cracks within the soil in a bid to avoid their enemy. The Dwarf bearded dragon is found across most parts of western and central Australia and the habitats of these lizards range from desert to lush forest.

The Central lizard of the “Pogona Vitticipeis” is the species which is the most common found in the pet or exotic animal trade. These beardies grow to be around six to seven inches, when measured from snout to tail and their diet include a wide variety of foods, like lettuce, crickets, cockroaches as well as various fruits, such as strawberries and other types of leafy vegetables. Their name central or inland bearded dragon stems from the area in which they are naturally found and since the inland part of Australia is predominantly desert, pet keepers must re-create a desert type environment to allow these fascinating lizards to feel at home and to thrive in captivity.

The other bearded dragons which make up the eight types of bearded dragons include; The Nullabor Bearded Dragon or “Pogona Nullabor”, Mitchell’s Bearded Dragon or “Pogona Mitcheilli” and The Western Bearded Dragon.

The “Pogona Mitcheilli” is small specie and at adulthood these small lizards measure only five and half inches. The inland dragons however reach a manageable size of seven inches and the fact that they are hardy and tenacious lizards, has meant that they have been successfully sold in the pet trade for many years.

Those who are restricted by space or prospective pet owners who are fascinated by reptiles will find that these reptiles are wonderful pets and although there are eight recognized bearded dragon types, the central or inland type is among the easiest type to keep in captivity.
